Day 1: At long last, the adventure begins!

After about a month of preparation getting the house ready and getting moved out into the RV, we’ve actually hit the road!

Well, at least we’ve left our driveway. We’re now in the parking lot of the local community college having a late lunch at about 3:45 p.m.. After that, will be hitting the open road, westward bound.

  1. Congratulations on getting out of the driveway! We wish you safe travels! Your RV is HUGE! Can’t wait to see it in person! Have a good day everyone!

  2. Hey Ben,
I’m not sure if you say this on the blog anywhere? I was wondering if you would talk a little bit about the vehicle you had when you started, and why you chose it? What its towing capacity was and how you got it prepared for the trip.
And also talk about the trailer you chose? The weight of it. Why you picked it? etc.

    The reason I ask…
We have a pop up tent trailer, and I spent a lot of time researching a vehicle that could tow it and still get decent gas mileage. I was just wondering why you picked the vehicle and trailer you picked, and some of the considerations that went into you decision.

Thanks again, for sharing all that you do!

    • Hi Al,

We already had the Kia Sorento with its tow rating of 5000 pounds, so it was really a question of purchasing an RV that would work with the Kia. With a dry weight of 4300, the first LBYL RV was right up to the limit when loaded, and the Kia’s short wheelbase gave us a good bit of trailer sway when towing above 50mph or when being passed by semi trucks, and that’s with weight distribution and anti-sway systems installed.

We picked that particular trailer (Wildwood XLite 26BHXL) because it was the only 26 foot bunkhouse on the market with a dry weight of less than 4500 pounds.

Having transitioned to towing a 5th wheel with a pickup, I can tell you it’s like night and day. 60mph driving is practically a one-handed affair in almost all conditions.

  3. Wow! 2 years, 2 vehicles, 2 RVs and I don’t know how many thousands of miles later. You guys are still going strong. Live while you look. Enjoy the journey as long as you can. And when you reach the end. Don’t stop. <3

  4. I enjoy your pictures of flying. It’s a wonderful adventure. Thank you for sharing.
    Safe Travels Baruch Hashem,
