Circumnavigating Manhattan

We’ve lived in New York for 17 years now, and today we finally attempted something I’ve been wanting to do since we moved here: circumnavigating Manhattan:

We put in at Hazzard’s Boat Ramp under the GW bridge:

As we approached the southern end of Manhattan and the New York Harbor, the water got pretty choppy, so we had to slow down:

Lots of ferry traffic to dodge:

We rounded the southern tip of the island and headed up the East River:

The Brooklyn Bridge, first of many we would pass under:

The United Nations building:

Long Island City in the background, and in the foreground, U Thant Island, the smallest island in Manhattan:

Passing by the sometimes-treacherous Hell Gate:

Once we passed Hell Gate into the Harlem River, the water calmed down and we were able to go full throttle:

Some of the 14 bridges over the Harlem River:

M drove for a while:

The Spuyten Duyvil Bridge only has 5 foot clearance, but we managed to squeak under after waiting for a train to pass:

What a great trip!
