I replaced the anode rod in the RV’s water heater.  The anode rod is more attractive to corrosion than the walls of the water tank, so the anode is sacrificed to preserve the tank.  The rod is supposed to be replaced every 6 months, and it looks like it was about time to replace it.  The rod on the left looked like the unit on the right when installed:
