2012 Vacation, Day 5

This morning we left the RV at the campground and drove to the North edge of the bay that separates us, across 12 miles of water, from Kennedy Space Center where a Delta IV Medium (4,2) rocket was launched this morning.  We listened to the countdown on the radio as we waited:

And liftoff!  Because the rocket is 12 miles away, it took a bit over a minute for the roar of the engines to reach us.  It was loud enough to set off all the car alarms where we were standing:

Seeing a 20 story-tall, one-million pound rocket claw its way into space is something I’ll never forget:

After the launch, we drove to a nearby park for our first glimpse of Florida beaches:

Next we visited Kennedy Space Center.  The bus tour took us past the crawler-transporter used to move the Space Shuttle:

We also had the chance to walk through a mission control room which recreated an Apollo moon mission:

Next we entered the main display area:

We also saw the VAB, one of the largest buildings in the world, where the Shuttle is mounted on its rocket boosters:

Next we heard a lecture from Jerry Ross, who among other accomplishments flew on seven Shuttle missions:

Also on display was this mars rover, built entirely of legos:

Our last stop before closing was the rocket garden:

Great day at Kennedy Space Center!  Tonight we’re overnighting at a Walmart near West Palm Beach, Florida.

2012 Vacation, Days 2-4

Sukkos, which is a two-day holiday and was on Monday and Tuesday, was interesting.  M had fun riding his scooter near the shul, and we went for a walk through the local part of Raleigh, which has some beautiful homes.  It was very hot and humid, which was not much fun.

Today is the first day of Chol HaMoed, and M seems pretty out of it:

Today we drove South to Orlando to pick up Trish and B at the airport.  We’re staying at a campground hear Cape Canaveral in anticipation of seeing a NASA rocket launch tomorrow!

2012 Vacation, Day 1

M and I left home late Saturday night, overnighted at a Walmart, then drove South today to reach Raleigh, NC to spend the next two days at the shul here for Sukkos:

Trish and B stayed behind, as Trish preferred to spend Sukkos at home with friends.

The sukkah I made out of insulation panels held together with hinges works really well:

Happy Sukkos from Raleigh, NC!

Mongaup Pond again!

We went to Mongaup Pond for the weekend again.  For me, I must admit the highlight was testing the new antenna.  Without it, we get no signal.  With the new antenna, I get three bars.  Victory!

We had S’mores Saturday night:

The usual Sunday fun, though for the first time we caught nothing:

2nd Annual Assateague Thanksgiving

We went down to Assateague Island for Thanksgiving, like we did last year.  This was our second trip with the new RV.  We arrived at Assateague around midnight on Wednesday night.

Thursday morning was like the whole weekend, sunny and in the 60s.  The campground was pretty empty on Thursday, but it did fill up a bit over the weekend.

Not many people on the beach.  We spent the whole day wandering the beach and collecting shells:

We went to the visitor center on the way back from going into town to buy a hatchet and firewood:

I taught M a stance that maximized the likelihood of having the same number of legs at the end of the exercise.  Safety first!

We had a great campfire on the beach Saturday night.  I won’t forget B’s wide eyes as I recited Jabberwocky, which we used to do at Hancock.  We also sang Ghost Riders and Paradise.  Of course, we had s’mores as well.

Sunday started with a beautiful sunrise:

M’s mining operation:

We left Sunday morning and drove the hour or so to the southern end of Assateague, in Virginia.  The Virginia side of the island is a wildlife refuge.

There’s an old lighthouse there, which is still operational, albeit with modern optics:

We collected quite a few shells, and I flew my kite for a bit.  It’s quite a birder’s destination; we saw many people with ridiculously large lenses photographing far-off birds.

Next to Assateague is Wallops Island, home of NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility.  They have a great little visitor center which we enjoyed.

Here’s a Little Joe, used at Wallops to test the Mercury capsule’s LES (launch escape system):

2011-11-27 15.59.13

This past summer we saw its successor, Little Joe II, which was launched at White Sands.

We were home by Sunday evening.  The new RV is great!  It’s very nice to be able to pull over and have a meal or use the bathroom without having to fold up or down the RV.  Crosswinds were an issue at times, especially coming over the Delaware bridge, but we managed.

As always, we are looking forward to our next trip!
