Day 942: Flying to Kettletop

Shabbos here at Elephant Butte Lake State Park was pleasant.  This morning, I got up early to get in a flight before the forecasted winds blow in later today:

Launch of flight #98:

I decided to fly out to Rattlesnake Island, seen here in the upper right corner of the photo:

I circled and climbed to gain enough altitude to safely glide back to the mainland in case an engine failure occurred while making the crossing to the island:

This should be high enough:

Across we go:

And back to the mainland:

I flew the shoreline north:

I flew along the Long Point peninsula:

Across from the tip of Long Point is Kettletop.  I decided to fly over Kettletop, so again I circled to gain altitude for a safe crossing:

On my way back, I passed Carl, then Kirk and Ron flying together:

When I came home, this was waiting for me.  M had stepped on this 3/4” long thorn while wading:

M found this quartz crystal while digging around in the sand:

This afternoon, the winds came up as expected.  M left his Crocs outside, and one of them was blown into the lake.  We watched it floating away:

Day 940: Beach Fun at Elephant Butte Lake SP

This morning the weather was favorable for flying, so I set up for launch along with my Albuquerque flying friends Sue and Carl.  We last flew together at Salton Sea.  Kirk is here too but decided not to fly today.

Winds were light and variable, and at 4,600 feet of elevation I had a number of failed launches before managing to launch flight #97:

Our RV is in the center, and Team Albuquerque is on the right:

Lots of lakeshore to explore:

After homeschool, the kids had a great time playing in the shallow water:

We’re only a couple feet from the shoreline, so we feel like we’re houseboating:

Kirk took the kids for a boat ride:

Good Shabbos from Elephant Butte Lake!

Day 924: Flying Ak-Chin

This morning I launched flight #94 from near the Ak-Chin airport.  I flew out over the adjacent farm land:

The goal was to fly over the massive Asarco Sacaton pit mine near Casa Grande, but the air was pretty bumpy, so I turned around and came back.  I flew over our camping area before landing:

In addition to doing homeschool, B drew this butterfly:

I sure hope Trish sells some of these soon, we’re running out of room:

Day_924_07

This afternoon I went for a perfectly dull bike ride, riding 10 miles out and back on a straight and flat road.  I think total elevation gain was about 150 feet:

As I returned to the RV, fellow PPG pilot Jay was launching from his yard, which is adjacent to our camping area:

I launched flight #95, again hoping to get to the pit mine but forced to turn back due to bumpy conditions:

Day 919: From Glamis to Ogilby

This morning I launched flight #91 and flew east, away from the dunes:

Day_919_01

On the way back, I could see most of the dune field from this altitude:

There are now many more RVs here for the three-day weekend:

Again, flying the dunes:

Oh hello there:

Jonathan and I followed this group for a bit:

After the morning flight, we packed up to escape the ever-increasing dust and drove southeast to the Ogilby Road and American Girl Mine Road area.  This BLM area is just a few miles from the southern end of the Glamis dune field, but its far enough away that we’re spared the crowds:

Canyon and Jonathan and I launched (flight #92 for me) and flew out over the neighborhood.  Behold the blessed isolation:

Hello RV:

Day_919_10

M and I raced along this road.  There was quite a bit of wind, so in this direction I had to do S-turns to avoid leaving him behind:

Day_919_11

The air was pretty thermic, as today was a hot day.  I landed about an hour before sunset:

Good Shabbos from Ogilby:

Day 918: Flying Glamis, Day 2

This morning, we launched (flight #89 for me) about 15 minutes before sunrise so we could view the sunrise from the air.  Sue let me use her Ozone Roadster 2 wing so I could keep up with everyone else.  It was still a bit dark when we launched:

It was another great flight, getting low and flying the contours of the dunes:

Kirk captured some video of me flying Sue’s wing:

After breakfast, Kirk and Sue let me and M drive their RZR around the little dunes around our camp:

Most of our flying group left for a weekend fly-in in Maricopa, so we reluctantly said our goodbyes.

This afternoon, Trish did some face painting for B:

Trish also made a stamp for the Etsy store where she sells her crocheted creations:

This afternoon I launched flight #90:

Day_918_12

Glamis is really starting to fill up for the weekend.   I passed a number of groups out on the dunes:

The highlight of the flight was following this pair of sandrails:

This video contains highlights from today’s flights, as well as other flights from this week:

Tonight was terribly dusty in the RV as many of an estimated 150,000 visitors arrived for Presidents Day weekend.  I’m glad we’re leaving tomorrow.
