Day 859: From Big Bend to The Field Lab

Today we packed up and said goodbye to our fantastic dispersed camping location in Big Bend National Park.  Big Bend was so much more than we had imagined, we saw and learned quite a bit this past week:

Day_859_01

We drove up to the visitor center where I filled the RV’s water tanks by ferrying water from the spigot to the RV using our 7-gallon jerry can and B’s scooter:

Trish spotted a bird nest in this plant:

We drove west out of the park, stopped in Terlingua for some groceries, then drove north spend a couple days with PPG pilot John Wells.  Little did I know when I found John in an online PPG pilot directory that he was the founder and owner of the Southwest Texas Alternative Energy and Sustainable Living Field Laboratory, his one-man experiment in off-grid living, now in it’s ninth year.  John maintains a daily blog where he shares his experiences.

We parked the RV on John’s 40-acre plot with fantastic vistas and no visible neighbors.  He introduced us to Ben, a Texas Longhorn John adopted at 10 days old after Ben’s mother drowned.  Three and a half years later, Ben is all grown up:

John took us up the road to see his house:

John built his house (right), and greenhouse (left).  He’s currently restoring an old airstream trailer:

John’s three roosters are for the most part well behaved:

On my walk, I found this crystal-encrusted rock:

Day_859_16

I assembled the PPG and tried to launch.  I haven’t flown since August, and no-wind launches at 3,500 feet are a bit tricky.  The first time I didn’t run hard enough, and the second time the wing came up perfectly, but when my brain said “full throttle!” my thumb pushed the kill button.  By then, it was too dark to fly:

John gave Ben his dinner:

John also feeds his local rabbit neighbors:

Tomorrow I’ll try to fly again.

Day 858: Big Bend National Park, Day 6

Shabbos was quite windy and we had a bit of rain and lightning towards evening.  We lit the candles for the seventh night of Chanukah last night:

This morning was old and windy, but at least the storms had passed:

Day_858_01

We drove out to the west side of the park to the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive.  Form here, we could see the Window, where we had hiked to from Chisos Basin on Thursday, from this side:

Our first stop was a brief walk on the Mule Ears Trail to view the Mule Ears:

A narrow canyon spills out through this punchbowl and down into the valley where the springs are.  At the springs, cottonwoods and other water-hungry plants grow:

Next we hiked down to the Homer Wilson Ranch, seen here in the distance:

Day_858_26

The building is in surprisingly good shape considering it was abandoned over 70 years ago.  The former ranch land covered over 28,000 acres:

Our last stop of the day was Sam Nail Ranch.  The Chisos towards sunset:

Day 855: Big Bend National Park, Day 3

This morning M managed to photograph the sunrise:

B and I did some homeschool outside, and we found this stick bug on my chair:

In its natural habitat, it’s much harder to see:

Day_855_06

Trish taught B how a voltage divider works.  Obviously, I married well:

Day_855_07

Once I finished teaching my subjects, I rode my bike towards the Chisos Mountains, a ride which would have a 2700 foot elevation gain over 12 miles.  The section from our campsite to Panther Junction was a 3% to 5% grade:

Day_855_08

I then turned west at Panther Junction, fighting a brutal headwind until I turned south onto the Chisos Basin road.  Here the grade kicked up quite a bit:

Day_855_09

In the higher elevations, different plants grow:

Day_855_10

At this point, I could see the saddle through which I would cross into the Chisos Basin:

After crossing the summit at 5700 feet, I descended a few hundred feet to Chisos Basin:

The rock here has been worn slick by rain storms and that last step is hundreds of feet down, so we were very careful:

Day 854: Big Bend National Park, Day 2

This morning after homeschool we drove out to the west side of the park.  We stopped at the Ocotillo Grove dispersed camping area to look for remnants of the farming community called Terlingua Abajo.  We walked along Terlingua Creek:

We eventually found an interpretive sign:

This side of the creek has a couple ruins, but most of them are on the other side of the creek:

Our next stop was the Santa Elena Canyon trail:

Day_854_26

The river is banked by mud flats, so it’s easy to tell who has been here:
