Day 859: From Big Bend to The Field Lab

Today we packed up and said goodbye to our fantastic dispersed camping location in Big Bend National Park.  Big Bend was so much more than we had imagined, we saw and learned quite a bit this past week:

We drove up to the visitor center where I filled the RV’s water tanks by ferrying water from the spigot to the RV using our 7-gallon jerry can and B’s scooter:

Trish spotted a bird nest in this plant:

We drove west out of the park, stopped in Terlingua for some groceries, then drove north spend a couple days with PPG pilot John Wells.  Little did I know when I found John in an online PPG pilot directory that he was the founder and owner of the Southwest Texas Alternative Energy and Sustainable Living Field Laboratory, his one-man experiment in off-grid living, now in it’s ninth year.  John maintains a daily blog where he shares his experiences.

We parked the RV on John’s 40-acre plot with fantastic vistas and no visible neighbors.  He introduced us to Ben, a Texas Longhorn John adopted at 10 days old after Ben’s mother drowned.  Three and a half years later, Ben is all grown up:

John took us up the road to see his house:

John built his house (right), and greenhouse (left).  He’s currently restoring an old airstream trailer:

John’s three roosters are for the most part well behaved:

On my walk, I found this crystal-encrusted rock:

I assembled the PPG and tried to launch.  I haven’t flown since August, and no-wind launches at 3,500 feet are a bit tricky.  The first time I didn’t run hard enough, and the second time the wing came up perfectly, but when my brain said “full throttle!” my thumb pushed the kill button.  By then, it was too dark to fly:

John gave Ben his dinner:

John also feeds his local rabbit neighbors:

Tomorrow I’ll try to fly again.

Day 737: Another Flight at Merrymeeting Field

This morning the weather was just perfect.  I took off a bit earlier today.

Launch of flight 55:

I flew for about 45 minutes:

The grass was slick with dew, so I slipped and fell at the very end of the landing:

For the sake of completeness, here’s the video from yesterday’s and today’s flights:

We drove north to Bangor, where we will spending Shabbos with Congregation Beth Abraham.  We managed to squeeze our RV into the driveway of our hosts, Bruce and Naomi.  I went for an afternoon ride and ended up at this lake:

Good Shabbos form Bangor, Maine!

Day 736: Flight 54 at Merrymeeting Field

We woke up to a cool and dewey morning here at Merrymeeting Field.  I got off to a late-ish start, taking off around 8:15.

It was a great flight over beautiful terrain.  The air was for the most part smooth.

This video includes today’s flight and tomorrow’s flight, which had a slip-and-slide landing due to wet grass:

B made some helpful signage for her room:

In addition to homeschool, B did some art:

Day 695: Onward to New York

This morning we conveniently woke up at Albert Airport, so I walked the PPG out to the runway for a flight:

It’s pretty, in a farm community kind of way:

Flying over the runway, the RV is parked on the right side of the photo.  Walking the PPG out that quarter mile to the runway was not so much fun:

After a good bit of driving, we arrived in New York, where it all started almost 700 days ago:

This afternoon I went for a bike ride up in the Harriman Mountains:

We will be in town for a while doing repairs on the house for the tenants.  Trish and B hope to ride in the Tour de Simcha charity ride.  Please contact us to help support B in her quest to be the youngest rider ever to ride the 72 miles to raise money to fund summer camp opportunities for special needs and seriously ill children.

Good Shabbos from Monsey, New York! Tonight we’re overnighting at a local synagogue, then moving the RV into our driveway on Sunday, which may be somewhat involved.  See the trip map for today’s drive and our current location.

Day 681: Morning Flight, College Reunion Weekend

This morning M and I drove back to the field for an early morning flight.  It was cold enough that I put on my flight suit:

The air was bumpy down low, so I climbed to about 500 feet above the ground where the air was smooth. At that altitude, the winds were strong enough that I was’t able to make much headway, so it was another short flight. Shaking out the legs before landing:

Later in the day, we stopped by Grandpa Glenn’s house to say goodbye to him and Edna and Tricia’s sister.  Grandpa Glenn gave the kids an old R/C truck he had for the road.  We stopped at Menards to do a bit of shopping:

Day682_10

We told the kids that the old radio ads say “save big money at Menards”, and indeed, M was shocked (perhaps feigned) at the incredible bargains:

Day682_11

After shopping for groceries, we left Wausau (thanks Aunt Diane for hosting us!) and drove to Appleton, where Trish and I will visit with old friends at our college anniversary.  The college arranged parking for us in one of their lots:

Tricia’s roommate from her freshman year stopped by to visit us towards sunset.  We had a great time catching up!

Good Shabbos from Appleton, Wisconsin!  See the trip map for today’s drive and our current location.
