Day 516: Death Valley Visit 2, Day 7

Although my parents went home with David and Leisl and the kids yesterday morning, they kept the hotel room even though they didn’t come back until the middle of the day.  The kids had never slept in a hotel room, so Trish and the kids spent the night in the hotel room.  It’s funny that for them it was an exotic travel experience.  B was so excited she took pictures:

This morning a roadrunner came by to say hello:

Once my parents arrived back in Death Valley, we hiked up to the gazebo above the Death Valley Inn:

Viewed from here, it’s obvious that Furnace Creek Ranch is a man-made oasis in the middle of a vast desert valley:

The gazebo has seen better days:

I went up for a flight near sunset.  As a kid I used to bike out to the airport and watch the planes takeoff and land.  I was excited to finally be using the airport as a pilot:

It’s the lowest airport in the US.  At 210 feet below sea level, the air is thick, so takeoff runs are short:

I had to go quite high to conform to the FAA request to fly high enough to avoid bothering wildlife:

The airport and Furnace Creek are on the right side of the photo.  I’m at about 1000 feet here:

Day 489: Big Wings and Small Paintings

This morning the winds were in the 1MPH – 2MPH range, so takeoff and landing would be challenging, but I flew anyway.  This was my 10th flight:

I managed to stick the landing despite the fast approach due to lack of wind:

B made a cover for the short story she wrote:

In Geography Through Art, the kids painted miniature paintings like those commonly painted in India:

About 30 minutes before sunset, the wind was at about 6MPH, which made for an easy takeoff and landing:

Day 482: Rain in Las Vegas

This morning I went up for a flight (solo flight #9, I think).  The wind was mild and kept changing directions, but after moving the wing a couple times I was able to launch on the first attempt.  It was too bumpy for my liking up there, so I came down after 5 minutes of flying.  Here I am getting ready to land, the RV is in the center of the frame:

During homeschool, it started to rain a bit.  We toyed with the idea of moving the RV out of the dry lake bed, but the forecast called for scattered showers, so we were confident that the lake wouldn’t flood with runoff from the surrounding hills.  By this evening, it looked like 50% of the lake surface is covered by puddles, with the other half being gooey mud.  It will be interesting to see how long it takes to dry.  We have enough water for about 10 days, so we don’t have to leave any time soon.

Day 481: Shooting the Breeze. And Cans.

This morning, M and I replaced the tube in his motorcycle’s rear wheel.  The tubes we found at Walmart are for bicycles, so they are designed for a tire with a slightly smaller diameter.  To reduce the inner diameter of his motorcycle tire so it matched, we cut the stem off his old tube and left it inside the tire to be used as filler.  The new tube held, and M had a great time zooming around on the lake bed.

During homeschool, I interrupted to show how a brushed motor works:

Trish and the kids made chops as part of their Asia study in “Geography through Art” course:

My parents had saved my childhod BB gun, and we brought it out to the RV from their house last night.  We will be leaving it here when we leave Las Vegas, but M wanted to learn how to shoot it.  After a brief test, and gave it to him, and he tried all sorts of different firing positions:

Conditions looked favorable to fly, so I got out my PPG motor:

As I got ready to fly, the winds picked up quite a bit, so I decided to just kite the wing:

Not a bad sunset:

Tonight I helped B mount a metal plate to the underside of her bunk so that her magnetic chandelier, designed to be a school locker accessory, can hang over her desk.  Here I am waving the measuring tape about:

Another beautiful high-60s day in the Las Vegas area!
