Day 490: Homeschool, Smoking Vehicles, and Helicopters

It’s another beautiful day here on Jean Lake:

Day490_01

Part of homeschool today was practicing camera control manipulation outdoors.  The kids are using their cameras in “M” mode, manually adjusting ISO, shutter speed, and aperture to get the correct exposure:

Next up was an introduction to Stencyl:

Meanwhile, in the distance, something was going on involving trucks with colored smoke and a circling helicopter, seen here on the left:

In Geography Through Art, the kids painted the Taj Mahal:

In Writing, B completed the cover for her short story, which was written on circular sheets of paper:

All in a day’s work!

Day 489: Big Wings and Small Paintings

This morning the winds were in the 1MPH – 2MPH range, so takeoff and landing would be challenging, but I flew anyway.  This was my 10th flight:

I managed to stick the landing despite the fast approach due to lack of wind:

B made a cover for the short story she wrote:

In Geography Through Art, the kids painted miniature paintings like those commonly painted in India:

About 30 minutes before sunset, the wind was at about 6MPH, which made for an easy takeoff and landing:

Trish and B went with Bubbe and Grandma DiAnn to a cowboy products expo that was a part of the rodeo that’s in town:

Micha brought his trailer back to Jean Lake and parked it within eyeshot:

While waiting for the ladies to return, M and I played with long exposures as night.  The “sunrise” is city glow from Boulder City:

Grandma DiAnn dropped off Tricia and B after dark, but drove off the lake bed on a dirt road that didn’t lead back to the paved road.  It took a while, but we finally met up and drove back to the lake bed and out to the paved road together.  High adventure!

Day 487: Heading Back Out of Town

We had a great Shabbos in Las Vegas.  This morning, we took advantage of being in town by emptying our sewer tanks and filling up our propane:

Day485_01

We then went to my parents’ house where we filled up our water and washed off the mud that had been sprayed onto the RV by trucks circling us on Jean Lake last week:

Before heading back out to Jean Lake, we attended the synagogue’s first annual dinner.  It was exciting to see how far the congregation has come since its founding just three years ago:

We drove back to Jean Lake after dark, arriving around 11pm.  We picked a spot closer to the edge of the lake bed, so hopefully we will be more likely to not be used as a pylon for late night drivers.
