Day 770: Sailing Portland Harbor

We had a nice Rosh Hashanah in Old Orchard Beach!  Before the advent of cheap air travel, Old Orchard Beach was a major Jewish summer destination, and the town had several kosher hotels and a large, albeit seasonal Jewish population.  Today, folks travel far and wide for their summer vacations, and the Jewish side of Old Orchard Beach has shrunk considerably.  Nonetheless, the turn-of-the-century synagogue had about 100 attending at least part of Rosh Hashanah services.  One of the highlights of the holiday was walking on the beach to and from the synagogue.

We had a nice time having meals with our old friends from Portland, Baruch and Elise and their son, and their neighbors in Sharon, Massachusetts, our new friends Burt and Alice and their daughter and her husband and son!

Today we hitched up the RV and left Old Orchard Beach.  Thanks for hosting us Alan!  We drove north to a marina just north of Portland where Alan’s brother Neal moors his 38-foot sailboat.  Neal invited us to join him for an afternoon sail in the harbor.  The first order of business was to raise the mainsail:

We headed out into the harbor.  The winds picked up to about 15 knots, which caused the boat to heel over considerably as we tacked up-wind:

I did a bit of manning the wheel.  The boat weighs about 10 tons, so there’s a considerable delay between wheel inputs and change of heading.  It was a challenge avoiding over-steering oscillations, especially as the wind changed intensity and direction:

B called her friend on the way back.  I imagined her saying something like “Yes darling, just out on the yacht, you know.  Lovely day, just lovely.”:

Back on shore, the sails were tied down and covered:

We plugged in to charge the boat’s battery:

Thanks for the amazing experience Neal!  I had been sailing once in high school, for the rest of the family it was the first time.

After tying down the boat, we all drove to the synagogue in Portland for Mincha and Maariv and to break the fast.  The rabbi invited us to overnight at the synagogue and attend Shacharis the next morning, so we will be staying at the synagogue tonight.

Day 767: Bowdoinham to Old Orchard Beach, Maine

Shabbos was sunny and beautiful at Merrymeeting Field in Bowdoinham, Maine, ironically the first flyable day since we arrived.  Mid-morning, we walked into town to see the town parade that was part of Bowdoinham Days.  Before bed on Saturday night, we watched the fireworks from our RV.

This morning was rainy once again, so unlike last time we stayed here, I didn’t get any flying in during our visit.  Thanks for hosting us again Mark!

We packed up and headed south to Old Orchard Beach, where we will be spending Rosh Hashanah with our Portland friends Baruch and Elise, who now live in Sharon, Massachusetts, and their neighbors Burt and Alice who hosted us in their driveway when we stopped over in Sharon.  We were slated to park in a driveway of a building owned by Neal, who lives in Old Orchard Beach, but in the end his brother Alan invited us to stay at the campground he owns, so we drove over there and settled in:

Thanks Neal and Alan!

We finished preparing food for the holiday, some of which we will take over to Burt and Alice’s condo rental and Baruch and Elise’s Hotel as we will be having meals together:

Day 763: Moncton, New Brunswick to Merrymeeting Field, Maine

Today we said goodbye to the Moncton Casino after replenishing our gas, propane, and DEF.  We stopped at the information center in St John, New Brunswick to dump sewer and fill fresh water.  We then crossed back into the US in Calais, Maine.  Unlike our entry into Canada from the US, the US border agent poked around the RV for a bit before letting us proceed.  On the way to Bangor we had a gas station incident when the nozzle trigger was somehow already engaged so when the latch was flipped to start the pump, the nozzle sprayed diesel everywhere for a second or so until I disengaged the nozzle trigger.  Good times!

In Bangor, we were planning to pick up a couple packages at our friends’ house, but at 6:30pm UPS still hadn’t delivered, so we had dinner in a supermarket lot.  By the time we were done the package had arrived:

We continued on, stopping at Walmart to buy groceries before arriving at Merrymeeting Field in Bowdoinham, Maine.  We stayed here four weeks ago on our way up to Canada, so we’re thrilled to be hosted here again!  The weather doesn’t look good, but hopefully I’ll be able to get in a flight or two like I did last time we were here.
