Day 901: Salton Sea, Day 15

I considered flying today after homeschool, but it was pretty windy:

Trish continues to crochet baby booties:

With all this wind, I figured it would be possible to get a passenger up in the air by pushing the passenger from behind.  With the wind at 15MPH, I would only have to add a bit of ground speed to get the wing up to its flying speed.  Trish went first:

I held on the the harness when the wing came up to make sure the wing came up straight, and also to prevent Trish from being pulled back too far:

And off she goes!

Here’s a video of Tricia’s first flight:

On her second “flight”, Trish didn’t quite stick her landing, but it was OK since she was only a few feet above the ground:

M went next:

They both really enjoyed their flights!

Day 900: Salton Sea, Day 14

Happy Day 900!  Today, after homeschool, I went for a bike ride to the next town north, Salton Sea Beach.  The blocks closest to the shore are mostly ruins thanks to the Salton Sea floods of the 1970s:

This afternoon, a bunch of pilots took to the sky.  I’m in the upper left:

Trish practiced kiting the wing:

I put M in the kiting harness:

I showed him how to do a forward launch, and after he brought the wing up, I pushed him from behind and he was flying down the beach about 3 feet above the ground:

This afternoon, I went to the post office to pick up M’s geometry book.  The Salton City post office is a room within the general store:

I went for a bike ride out to the airport and poked around this abandoned building:

Day 894: Salton Sea, Day 8

Remember back on Day 589 when I modified the water heater so we could pump its water back into the RV and live on that water in a pinch?  Of course you do.  One problem that has come up the time or two we actually tried to use this feature is a lack of good flow out of the water heater since the water heater’s anode rod almost entirely fills the fittings it goes through, thereby preventing all but a trickle of water from escaping through the hose attachment I added.  Today I solved that problem by taking my angle grinder to the anode rod, reducing the diameter of the part of the rod that lies within the fittings between the tank and the “T” junction for the garden hose.  Now the water should flow much more freely out of the hose:

B ordered a quadcopter for herself, and today it arrived.  M took some photos to show how tiny her quadcopter is compared to his:
